Hi all,

In order to better communicate with parents, students and other stakeholders in Victoria, I have put up a main blogsite at mrsiow.blogspot.com.

All future updates will be placed there as a general portal for all information for CCA, student events and any other interesting updates in my day to day vocation as a teacher in Victoria School.

Hope these updates will keep you posted on the vibrant life and culture that has defined and will continue to define Victorian life and culture here for the years to come.

Final Post- Back to School (Mon 8th Jan 2007)

It's Mon 8th Jan and we can see the start of the next school year in full swing.
Our newly inducted Sec 1s join the rest of the Victorian family in singing our school anthem.

Although their young voices are still unsure, they are now undeniably part of something bigger than themselves.

They are part of tradition, yet living in the present and working for a better future.

This will be the last post for this blog.
We hope you have enjoyed this journey with us.

What sets a Victorian apart? It's his style, brudder... it's his style.

One day, a competition was held to determine which school produced the best students. When it came down to the finals, only 3 candidates were left- of which one was a Victorian.

The judges then decided to ask each of them the following question to determine the winner "How would you respond if you were cornered by a big gangster attempting to exhort 50cents of your pocket money from you"

The first contestant, a finely dressed, well-articulated student with a polished accent answered, "I would attempt to diffuse this hostile situation by explaining the futility of the bully's action and counsel him on the error of his wayward behaviour"

The second finalist, an immaculately dressed, well-spoken student with perfect diction answered, "I would use my newly purchased 3G hand-phone with blue-tooth head set and GPS satellite positioning to discreetly take his picture and send to the police so that they can arrest him afterwards"

Then it was time for the Victorian student to answer. He said "Errr... well, I remembered that during my Sec 1 Camp, we were told by our teachers to be generous, kind and grateful to the people around us. I would give the bully $1 and tell him to keep the change."

VS- because WE got STANDARD lah!

While all the anxious parents are eagerly looking out for their sons, one single lonely girl was eagerly awaiting the return of her father.

Watch how little Jialing's eyes light up when she sees the return of her father, our PE Teacher, Mr Tan Chong Kiat, as he returns after the camp.

To parents, teachers and fellow Victorians:

It has been my pride and priviledge to be your Camp Commandant again this year.

This successful camp could not have been successful without the help of the following people:

1)The staff and crew from ISS-Camp High Achievers- in particular Jody, Jeremy, Neng Hao and gang

2)Our fantastic Form Teachers who stayed with the boys throughout the camp and saw them through each and every activity

3)Our student leaders: Camp Instructors and Peer Leaders, both past and present: Guys, I am proud of you all, each and everyone of you- in word, action and deed may you continue to be something more.

4)The VS PE Dept: to the brothers and our little sister in the Strike Team. Thanks for being there for me- I know that you guys are always there to back me up.
Kudos also to Mr Lim Swee Leong, our CCPE and 'adopted' member of the PE Dept for helping with the surveys and evaluations.

A sneak peak at our Ops Room and Emergency Board showing how we track sick students and monitor them.

Now that the camp is over and the students heading home soon, this privileged infornation is now 'declassified'- the cause for panic and concern is over, so no worries now:)

You can see that even though we are strict, firm and no-nonsense with them in our daily dealings; we take the care and well-being of each and every child seriously and monitor them in great detail.

Kudos to Mr Amir HMS, our PE teacher who was the designated First Aid officer + counsellor + stand-by ambulance driver.

We're starting to pack up before we go for breakfast. While the food here is good, nothing beats your home-cooked food mum.

When I come back from this camp, don't carry my bag for me- as a Victorian, I am now strong enough and man enough to take ownership of my own things.

I may not be an adult yet, but I'll be man enough to carry my own bags :)

EDGE 2007 Day 3- Good Morning, sunshine!

Rise and shine!

After a rousing and vibrant campfire yesterday, we begin our final day's events by taking all our boys on a 2.4km run around Jln Bahtera Campsite.

At VS, we train our X-Country and Track&Field runners ourselves. Our coaches are Mr Tan Chong Kiat and Miss Sheikha Fadzleen, teachers from the PE Department. Here we see them organising the run and timing the boys.

X-Country and Track&field have always been VS niche areas and we are the only NON-INDEPENDENT school in the Top 3 for both B and C division boys in these 2 sports.
So although we're the underdog in many ways, we make sure we give them a good run for the money.

Friday Prayer for Muslim Boys

As mentioned during the Orientation talk, it is not possible for us to take the muslim boys out for Friday prayers due to the large numbers and the distance.

However, we have given time and space for Muslim boys to say their own prayers. Lunch was extended by half an hour to give all boys sufficient time to eat, clean up and allow the muslim boys time to pray on their own.

Dear Parents,

Please do not worry if you do not see your son's class in the pictures or videos being uploaded. Rest assured that they are not being left out. All our boys are going through the same activities.

The choice of which class or students are captured is largely dependent on where I am at any particular given moment of time- and I regret that I cannot be everywhere at once. Due to the rotation of the classes and the different locations of each activity, it is difficult to ensure that I rotate sequentially from 1A to 1I to take pictures and videos.

As Camp Commandant, I need to trouble-shoot situation and manage events as they happen- taking photos and uploading happens as a consequence of that.

I will try my level best to feature all classes in my post and I seek the understanding of all parents if I am unable to feature your son or his class in the uploads.

Mid-Day Updates: Weather, Programmes and Health

Weather
The weather is holding up fine and it looks like clear skys, fair weather all the way. Tide has risen so teams taking the Mudpool route will be using an alternative track to avoid deep water.

Programmes
As you can see in the above picture, we are already preparing the firewood for campfire. Students have just finished their lunch and will be dispatched accordingly for their after noon programmes.

Health
Only minor scratches from Nature Rumble so far. Some mild cases of fever and nausea but all under control.
Home-sick cases have now been 'cured' with the appropriate 'medicine' and counselling from teachers and student leaders. They are now actively enjoying the camp.

Closing Thoughts for EDGE 2007 Day 1- 4th Jan

It has been an eventful day, for all teachers, student leaders and Sec 1 boys.
I'm glad to say that apart from a few minor scratches, there have been no other accidents.

A few cases of fever were brought to our attention. We have attended to them and done the necessary to bring their temperatures down and keep them under close watch.

2-3 cases of vomitting occured by this is more likely due to anxiety than anything else. All the boys who vomitted are actually feeling fine and in a lucid state of normalcy- student leaders are monitoring them.

2 cases of boys who are home-sick. They have been paired with our Camp Instructors and Peer Leaders who will be sleeping with them tonight to reassure them.

It is taking awhile for the boys to warm-up but I can feel the camaraderie slowly building and the boys starting to gel together. They are still childish and playful in many ways and lack the discipline and attention of their seniors- but hey, we've all been young and playful before :)

In time, I believe they will learn that the most valuable lessons we can teach them are not in the class room but through real-life experiences like these. It is this School of Hard Knocks that prepares them for the real world.

It is now 12.37am. It has been an eventful day and the boys have retired for the night. Lights out for the Sec 1 students was at 11.30am and they will assemble by 7.00am to get ready for breakfast.

What a downpour! The south-westerly winds have blown rain clouds from Malaysia towards our campsite and without much warning, we are now in the midst of a full blown storm.

The good news is that ALL boys are back under shelter safe and sound.
Kayaking group has beached up and returned to shore, Nature Rumble group has also completed their trek and returned to campsite. Climbing group have ceased all activities as well.

It is unlikely that the weather will permit us to resume Outdoor Activities as it is already late in the day. The good news is that most students have completed their stations and/or designated activities.

They may be wet, tired but all are in good spirits!

Hi all,

Weather is starting to clear up.
As of present we have a total of 361 Sec 1 boys with us heading out for the camp.
The buses have just arrived and we are preparing to depart for Jalan Bahtera Campsite.

Estimated time of arrival is 9.45am for all classes and we should be settled in by 10.30am
I will then conduct a safety briefing and then...

Rain, Rain Go Away...

It's 12.20am Thu morning and the rain hasn't stopped since 8pm Wed night.

Rest assured parents that we will not allow safety to be compromised if the rain continues to fall.

Do prepare your child for the camp as usual.

All students to assemble in PE attire (VS or ex-primary school-either way is fine) in school by 7.20am for morning assembly.

Once we reach the campsite, we will update our activity schedule accordingly.

Rest assured, your son is in good hands.
Know that in his years in Victoria, he will grow to become a Gentleman, Professional and Sportsman.

Last year, during the Sec 1 Orientation Camp we had some stormy weather too... Like true Victorias, we made the best of it and triumphed in the end. VS Boleh!

Welcome to E.D.G.E 2007 Victoria School Sec 1 Orientation Camp!

Over the next 3 Days, you son will become part of a great tradition of Victorians. This is his first step to becoming a Gentleman, Professional and Sportsman.

As the days progress, I will be constantly updating this page to give you up to date, 'live' feed information about the camp. You will also be able to subscribe to the Site Feed for update notification.

Please feel free to post your comments on each update as it will give the boys and the teachers a sense of encouragement knowing that you are there witnessing their triumphs and achievements.
